No More Waiting in WA : Ensuring Care for Every Survivor
Event description
Across Western Australia, too many victim-survivors of sexual assault are being forced to wait, travel hours, or go without care altogether when they need it most.
In the Peel region, survivors are turned away from their local hospital and told to travel more than 70 kilometres to Perth for a forensic medical examination. In Karratha, a woman waited eight hours for an examination to begin after arriving at a major health campus. While they are forced to travel and/or wait, victim-survivors are told not to drink, use the bathroom, or change clothing to preserve potential evidence.
It's not just forensic exams. In the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, and Kimberley regions, there is no state‑funded specialist sexual assault service at all. No crisis counselling. No therapeutic help. No support to rebuild.
This event is part of Fair Agenda’s campaign — to ensure that the WA Government funds sexual assault services and ensures that hospitals can care for survivors after sexual assault.
