No Such Thing As "Maladaptive"
Description
What's it all about?
This webinar will focus on understanding and supporting self-harm, suicidal ideation, and self-injurious stimming, from an intersectional, neuro-affirming, trauma-informed, anti-pathologising, anti-carceral, anti-sanist framework. It's specifically created for those working in allied health, mental health, healthcare, peer support, and other similar roles.
Key topics will include:
Disentangling self-harm, suicidal ideation, self-injurious stimming, and related experiences
Addressing stigma, stereotypes, myths, and misrepresentation
Understanding context, needs, function, and meaning (because everything occurs with a reason)
Interplay with sensory, cognitive, emotional, nervous system, capacity, disability, and accessibility-related domains
Navigating paradoxes in practice (e.g. when abstinence actually increases risk, and when the option of unaliving can be life-preserving)
Risk assessment, understanding, response, and management
Harm reduction, safety planning, and keeping folks safer
Vital considerations for affirming support and care
And more
Resources to support post-webinar reflection and learning will also be provided to all registered attendees post-live event, and an optional assessment quiz will be available folks who'd like the webinar to count as 2 hours of active CPD.
How will it be presented, and what's the vibe?
When and how?
The session will delivered live via Zoom, from 10am-12pm AEDT (Naarm-time) on Friday the 6th of November 2026. The session will run for 2 hours, and we'll have a 5min break in the middle to support pacing too :)
It'll also be recorded, available on-demand for all registered attendees for 90 days post-live event.
You can attend all of it live, part of it live, or just tune into the recording; whatever works best for you.
Engagement, accessibility, and vibes
You are welcome to engage in whichever way is most accessible for you. For example, during the live session you're welcome to have your camera on or off, stim, have pets co-attend, eat and/or hydrate, tune in from wherever is most comfortable for you, disappear to take your meds if you remember you've forgotten them partway through, stretch, be using a TENS machine for pain management, whatever it may be.
Alt text, image descriptions, and AAC-compatible resources will be available for anyone who needs them.
Folks' diverse experiences and insights are welcome and valued, and there will be space for questions, discussion, reflection, and such throughout. However, if you prefer to join without engaging in discussion, that's totally okay too.
I recognise that the topic might be a big one for some, depending on lived, living, and/or professional experience. I encourage you to engage at a pace, and from a place (literally and figuratively) that best supports your needs, access, capacity, and wellbeing.
Who is presenting it?
The webinar is created and will be presented by Lumen Gorrie (they/them). I'm a queer, trans, AuDHD+, chronically ill, disabled person living and working on unceded Wurundjeri land. I'm also a registered clinical psychologist and Board-approved supervisor, and am very passionate about all things neurodivergence, gender, queerness, eating disorders & differences, chronic illness, disability justice, autonomy, advocacy, and systemic change.

Zoom links and recording access
All registered attendees will be able to access the session via a Zoom link. This link will be sent to you the day before, and on the morning of, the webinar (so hopefully it's easy to track down in your inbox!).
All registered attendees will have access to the recording for 90 days after the session ends; you'll receive this link via email (alongside any resources), so you can watch/review it at a time and pace that best suits you. I've no doubt it goes without saying, but please do not distribute or forward the link/recording or resources to others :)
Thank you!
