    Event description

Join Dr. Han Ren for a 3-hour workshop on the practice of non-monogamy from a liberatory framework that integrates both lived personal and professional clinical experience. Han is a 1.5 generation queer polyamorous Chinese-American immigrant, licensed psychologist, content creator, speaker, and educator. This workshop is designed for mental health clinicians and coaches who have beginning to intermediate knowledge about working with non-monogamous clients and are looking to expand their awareness to be more systems-informed and intersectional. Pre-licensed students and non-clinicians are welcome to attend as well.

Non-monogamy awareness, practice, and discourse have become more prevalent in recent years, with one in three U.S. adults endorsing interest in this relationship style. However, there continues to be significant misunderstanding and stigma surrounding this practice, extending to the therapeutic space. Implicit biases and cultural conditioning around compulsory monogamy and mononormativity within western society color clinicians’ ability to effectively serve this population. This workshop provides historical and contemporary context on the practice of non-monogamy as not only a valid relationship structure, but a radical approach to collective liberation and trauma-conscious living. Weaving lived experience narratives, attachment theory, and sociopolitical paradigms, we will explore ways to conceptualize this practice as a lifestyle, orientation, and identity. We will cover common pitfalls and best practices for working therapeutically with non-monogamous clients through anti-oppressive and trauma-informed lenses.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Identify common pathways to engaging in non-monogamous relationships based on personal and political motivators.
    2. Distinguish and describe the key differences and similarities between various forms of non-monogamous relationships.
    3. Explain the contributing roles of frequent micro and macro factors that challenge non-monogamous relationships including cultural conditioning, attachment patterns, and mononormativity.
