• WHAT WILL I TAKE AWAY?

  In addition to the playful joy of working with the Open Theatre Practice, you’ll learn how to:

  • create a non-verbal, music-led learning environment that places the creativity of people with intellectual disabilities front and centre

  • strengthen your non-verbal communication skills

  • use the practice to increase engagement across the Australian Curriculum and beyond

• IF WE DON’T TALK, WHAT DO WE DO?

  Just to be clear, there will be plenty of friendly conversation and verbal explanation throughout the course. This is not a three-day vow of silence! OTP is rooted in improvisation, physical theatre and music. Beginning from a non-verbal place removes the barrier of spoken language, creating an accessible starting point for everyone. The first two days lay the foundations for the third, when you’ll observe the practice in action with young people with intellectual disabilities. By the end, participants invariably say, “Ah! I totally get it!”

• I’M A TEACHER — HOW DOES THIS SUPPORT MY PRACTICE?

  OTP aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Drama, supports the General Capabilities, and addresses a number of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Participants receive a curriculum mapping resource to support planning and reporting, along with a certificate of participation.

• I DON’T HAVE A DRAMA BACKGROUND. IS THIS FOR ME?

  Absolutely. No drama experience is needed. This is a relaxed, playful and practical approach that builds on the skills you already have as an educator, therapist or arts practitioner, giving you creative tools you can confidently adapt to your own setting.

• IS THERE SUPPORT AVAILABLE AFTER THE TRAINING?

  Yes! In-Person Creative is a Brisbane-based arts organisation that has been embedding OTP in school and community settings for more than three years. We work closely with the Open Theatre Company UK and are passionate about helping more young people experience this game-changing method. As you begin using the practice in your own setting, we’ll be available to provide ongoing mentoring, encouragement and guidance.
