Event description

VDB explores the rich world of the string quartet

Be transported by the sublime beauty of Jean Sibelius, Arvo Pärt and Edvard Grieg, revel in folk tunes from the Faroese and Shetland Islands, discover the extraordinary Icelandic composer María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir, and travel back to 17th Century Denmark with Dieterich Buxtehude, in a program traversing Baroque, folk and contemporary works from the Scandinavian north and the Lutruwitan/Tasmanian south.

The program features a new work from VDB's 2025 Composer-in-Residence, Quin Thomson. Titled Sjódreygil, the work is an elegy based on a Faroese myth and incorporates references to the Aurora, which in Quin’s words “(spell)binds people half a world apart, and has done so since time out of mind”.

Featuring Artistic Director Julia Fredersdorff on Baroque violin, Karina Schmitz and Katie Yap on Baroque viola, and Natasha Kraemer on Baroque cello.
