Event description

There's an old saying that Melbourne was built on Northcote's clay. At the peak of brick production in the suburb, 1.5 million bricks were produced every ten days, continuing for decades. The suburb's rich heritage of brick production has left its mark, giving us an incredible selection of brick houses and walls to enjoy and walk amongst. Join me to do just that as we make our way through some of my favourite brick-laden streets in Northcote!

If you joined my walk last year, you are more than welcome to join again as this is a different route to last year, just with the same start and end points! If this is your first time, I can't wait to introduce you to some cool bricks!

Meet at the Northcote Town Hall. Direct access by Route 86 Tram and a short walk from the Route 11 Tram and Merri, Northcote, and Westgarth Train Stations.

This Jane's Walk will be led by Bethany Greenwood, Northcote local and RMIT Urban Planning student.

This walk will go ahead in any weather, so please come in weather-appropriate attire!

Please note the walk will involve some small stretches of cobbled bluestone, so please contact me via the booking page if you have any access needs and I can easily re-route to accommodate. Please also note that this walk involves e hills. See map of route below.

Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by writer, urbanist, and activist Jane Jacobs. Running every year on the first weekend of May, roughly coinciding with Jane's birthday, these citizen-led walks occur in cities around the world.

I acknowledge that we will be gathering on unceded Wurundjeri Country, and express my deep gratitude to First Nations peoples for their continued connection to and care of Country.
