Event description

As part of Gather Round celebrations, join us for an evening of footy history, bought to you by the SANFL History Centre.

Neil Smith’s earliest memory of watching Norwood is the 1960 Grand Final, which Norwood lost to North Adelaide by 5 points. He will explore his memory of that game by delving into the remarkable resources of the SANFL History Centre where he is a volunteer and a member of the SANFL History Committee. The Centre collects, organises and preserves the history of South Australian football, a league that was established in 1877. Neil will talk about some of the treasures that are kept in the collection, with particular reference to his long-standing support for the Norwood Football Club.

About Neil Smith

Neil Smith is a life-long supporter of the Norwood Football Club, having been introduced to the love of footy by his Aunty Bess Treloar. She took Neil to the 1960 Grand Final, where Norwood lost by 5 points. He had to wait 25 years for his first Redlegs’ premiership but there have been plenty of highlights since. Neil has worked for the South Australian Film Corporation and the United States Information Service, and spent 21 years at Channel 9 Adelaide. He produced 11 years of “Curiosity Show”, was Manager of Children’s Programs and then the station’s Production Manager. When the station was sold in 1998, he established his own business, TAV Productions. He was Chair of Telethon for 25 years. In retirement, Neil volunteers as a tour guide at Adelaide Oval, is a member of the SANFL History Committee and a member of the Adelaide Crows Heritage Committee – and still a member of the Norwood Football Club.
