NOTATION November Book Club

NOTATION is a Gold Coast media brand that spends its days pulling apart the cultural, psychological and societal forces shaping brands, people and places. Naturally, our office spends a lot of its time reading. Passing books between desks, arguing about endings, working out what a story reveals about the world we live in.

We're bringing our bookish office chats off the page and into our community. NOTATION Book Club runs monthly at Bar Evelyn – a standing invitation to sit down with people who read the way we do.

This month, we’re reading The Correspondent by Virginia Evans, a heartwarming, witty story told entirely through letters. At 73, Sybil Van Antwerp has spent a lifetime putting her thoughts to paper. Stubborn, opinionated and fiercely independent, the retired lawyer writes to friends, family and the occasional famous name, while keeping her most personal letters unsent. But as she begins to reckon with the life she's lived, old wounds resurface and unfinished business calls. From strained family relationships to a chance at romance and a devastating loss she's carried for decades, Sybil's story asks what it means to let people in, make peace with the past and find that it's never too late to change.

Bar Evelyn is taking care of provisions, with a run of their best seasonal share plates for the table, paired with a wine selection from Whip Wines, who've generously donated a few bottles for the night. $60 gets you dinner and a glass of wine (non-alcoholic option available) – plus a night of good conversation, new people, and good food.
