November BIPOC Therapist Social
Description
BIPOC Therapist Social
Come join us at McCarren Parkhouse for a BIPOC Therapist Social!
This is an opportunity for BIPOC Therapists to breathe, share, and be in community with others who understand the unique weight we carry in this work. So often, we pour into others while holding the complexities of our identities, often in isolation. But healing work isn’t meant to happen alone.
Whether you're a seasoned therapist, just starting out, or somewhere in between, you are welcome here.
Presentation:
Shared Power, Shared Care: Building a Psychotherapy Worker Cooperative by Ada Umubera (she/her)
Transitioning to a worker-owned cooperative reflects our commitment to supporting queer and trans clinicians of color through the solidarity economy, centering worker power and economic sustainability. This journey is a labor of love for our clients, colleagues, and community, rooted in the belief that mental health care should embody our shared values—both inside and outside the therapy room. Shifting from employees to owners allows us to reimagine what is possible when clinicians actively shape the business, share decision-making power, and redefine success together.
In this workshop, Ada will discuss their path to building a psychotherapy cooperative in New York, including the key steps, tensions, and reflections along the way. Through guided questions and audience participation, she will invite clinicians to explore how worker-ownership might align with their own practices and values. She looks forward to sharing their journey and its impact on the broader mental health ecosystem. In the meantime, you can read more about our co-op conversion in Hell Gate.
A little more about our presenter <3
Ada Umubera (she/her) is a clinical social worker, supervisor, and creative based in New York City, and a worker-owner at MCM Collaborative Cooperative, a group private practice that centers queer and trans people of color and those living at the intersections of these identities. Across her work, she is interested in how our stories, relationships, and social worlds shape us, and in what becomes possible when we honestly question who we are, how we are, vs who we want to be. Whether shes is working with individuals, relationships, families, or pre-licensed clinicians, She aims to create a collaborative, affirming space where people can bring their full selves, move at their own pace, and draw from their own knowledge, resilience, and creativity. Grounded in anti-oppressive, feminist, and trauma-informed care, she is committed to building structures where communities and clinicians of color have the privilege to heal, lead, and dream up new ways of being.
