Now you see it - Exploring young people’s solutions to online hostility

Event description: This event will explore issues around gendered and racial online hostility and how young people of colour are leading the way to navigate it.

We’ll hear directly from young women of colour who will share their expertise about how they manage feeling safe online. We’ll discuss what feels unsafe about being online and what interventions and resources young people think would make online spaces feel safer.

Speakers:

Hanienah Lokman, is a Malaysian-born psychology student with a passion for inclusive education and mental health.

Anna Louey, is an actor, advocate and athlete. As a performer and theatre maker, she strives for representation of diverse faces in media and creative industries.

Sobur Dhieu, is a first-year law student studying their Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne.

Melis Layik, is a Turkish born law student, English tutor and community advocate for women's rights, queer rights and mental health literacy. 

Facilitated by Caitlin McGrane, Manager, Policy and Online Safety at Gender Equity Victoria.

Our conversation will center around the following three questions:

• How do young women and gender diverse people of color deal with negative online experiences?
• What strategies do young women and gender diverse people of color use to feel safe online?
• What needs to change to make online spaces safer for young women and gender diverse people of color?

We welcome individuals and organizations who regularly engage with young people including educators, community workers, anti-racism allies and e-safety advocates to attend.

Digital safety is imperative for young women and gender diverse people of colour, and something we all need to be advocating for!
