Wed, 28 Oct, 6pm - 8pm EDT

Description

New South Wales has a new Refugee Education & Empowerment Network!

Co-convened by colleagues at Bankstown Senior College and STARTTS (the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors), this new network is a state-wide network for discussions, sharing, and networking around the topic of how to best teach, support, and guide newly- and recently-arrived families who have experience of forced migration.

How can we create cultures of belonging for newly arrived students?

During this meeting you will learn more about how Bankstown Senior College creates a culture of welcome and belonging for newly arrived refugee students and hear from a panel of students about:

  • What helps them feel they belong at school

  • How BSC has supported them in the school context

  • What other schools could do to enhance welcome and belonging

In person option: Bankstown Senior College (Antwerp St, Bankstown, NSW 2200)

Online option: Join via zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86021765785?pwd=iX6eKC0iqdArUtRYuaLfDOajXLprus.1

About the NSW REEN co-convenors

STARTTS is a specialist, not-for-profit organisation that was established in 1988. It provides culturally relevant psychological treatment and support, and community interventions, to help people and communities heal the scars of torture and refugee trauma and rebuild their lives in Australia. STARTTS also fosters a positive recovery environment through the provision of training to services, advocacy and policy work.

Bankstown Senior College is a co-educational, non-uniform senior college for students in Years 10 to 12. We are proud to be part of the public education system and welcome students from all cultural backgrounds. We offer education for students of post-compulsory age, including those who are new to Australia, refugees, or students who have found traditional schooling difficult in the past. We provide both academic and vocational courses for Years 10 to 12. We also provide preparation courses for full-time and part-time students.
