Event description

There is no doubt that the mathematics performance data for Australian students is worrying (e.g., Hunter et al. 2025; Wernert et al. 2024). Clearly, the way that mathematics is being currently being taught in Australian classrooms is not working for many students. This raises the question of how we can teach mathematics in a way that all students have the best opportunity to learn it.

In this workshop, we will explore instructional strategies shown by robust research evidence to be effective for teaching mathematics to all students, and how these can be applied in the classroom. This includes:

• developing number sense for all students

• improving arithmetic fluency

• mathematical learning progressions and essential understandings

• the difference between task completion and learning.

This is a highly interactive workshop, and participants are encouraged to bring examples of mathematical content, students, and/or contexts where they have found it difficult to effectively teach mathematics. We will use a collaborative, problem-solving approach to work through these examples to determine effective strategies.
