Event description

The New Zealand Classical Saxophone Summer School was first held in 2016, and it is our mission to bring internationally renowned artists to Aotearoa for the School. In 2025, we are thrilled to host one of the world's most revered saxophone artists, Nobuya Sugawa

This unprecedented opportunity for saxophonists in this country is not to be missed.

Alongside Mr Sugawa, we have the brilliant Dutch saxophonist Niels Bijl, who now resides in Melbourne, Australia. New Zealand-based tutors Simon Brew (NZSO), Tomomi Johnston (Trionique) and Michael Jamieson (University of Auckland) complete the teaching team.

The weekend begins at 7 pm on Friday, 14th of February, with an ensemble rehearsal. The following two days will be packed with masterclasses, workshops, participant and tutor recitals, and group and individual lessons. There will also be plenty of saxophone gear to test and buy throughout the weekend, and the event will conclude with a public performance by participants on Sunday afternoon (all events will be finished by 6 pm).

All levels of experience are welcome, although we suggest a minimum of 4 years of playing experience, or about grade 5/6, to get the most from the Summer School. Music for the large ensemble will be sent out to you in advance.

The 2025 New Zealand Classical Saxophone Summer School will be held at the University of Canterbury School of Music, in the heart of Christchurch's beautiful Arts Centre: https://www.artscentre.org.nz/...
