Description

Explore the different types of descriptive language, and how to use it to enrich your characters, action and worldbuilding.

From capturing settings to manipulating metaphors - sensory language to descriptive action - this workshop guides you through the process of writing descriptions that evoke emotion, reveal a character's inner workings, ground them in a time and place, and propel your story forwards.

Learning outcomes

As part of this workshop, you will learn to:

  • Understand how descriptive language can evoke emotion, create context, and ground your story in time and place.

  • Distinguish between sensory description, active description and contextual description.

  • Utilise research to create richer descriptions.

  • Write more authentic, impactful descriptions.

Format

This is an online workshop with a focus on craft; it will be hosted via Zoom. This workshop is suitable for fiction writers of all levels and writing backgrounds.
