Ocean Heroes (Back Beach, Geraldton)
Description
All children deserve the opportunity to learn social skills, bond with others, and figure out what works for them.
People living with Autism face unique challenges that can make it difficult for them to develop self-confidence and make genuine connections. Learning to surf offers a fun, healthy, and unique way for people on the Autism spectrum to develop their confidence, boost self-esteem and make connections with others. That’s why Ocean Heroes was formed by Sam Moyle, Luke Hallam and Tom Johnston in 2016.
Ocean Heroes provide a unique opportunity for people on the Autism spectrum to take part in organised sport backed by a highly supported, safe and inclusive environment. By running free events and one-on-one surfing experiences, the organisation offers the Autism community the chance to experience the thrill of riding a wave!
As a volunteer, you have the option of helping out on the beach (registrations, donning wetsuits and lifejackets, handing out certificates etc.) or in the water (surfing with participants, an extra help around the participants and their paired surfer).
To be a volunteer you'll need:
A current Working With Children Check (we can work with you to attain this)
A positive, patient and caring nature, capable of working in groups
As a volunteer, roles include:
Surf volunteer: assisting taking our neurodiverse participants surfing (no surfing experience necessary - only competence in the ocean is required)
Beach volunteer: may involve helping our participants into wetsuits and lifejackets, helping them to register for the event, handing out certificates and more!
