Description

Dear Functional forum friends and colleagues,

For this month's Functional Forum, we welcome Ann Wine from Interclinical Laboratories talking to us about Hair Trace Mineral Analysis HTMA.

MINERAL HOMEOSTASIS ≠ MINERAL STATUS

Although blood chemistry answers many clinical questions, several minerals are tightly regulated in the circulation. The body redistributes, conserves, excretes and draws on tissue reserves to hold circulating concentrations within narrow limits. A result inside range confirms that regulation is intact. It does not report the size of the reserve maintaining it.

Some circulating measures are further shaped by factors independent of body stores. Plasma zinc moves with the acute phase response, with albumin, and with time of day. Copper and ferritin rise with inflammation as zinc and iron fall.

This session examines the distinction using magnesium, zinc, copper, calcium, sodium, potassium and selected toxic elements: what blood measures well, where its limits lie, and what Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis contributes as a complementary assessment.

Blood and hair sample different compartments. The useful clinical question is what the second adds, when the first is unremarkable.
