ART TALKS - Beyond the Gilded Frame: Portraits of Colonial Childhood with Professor Elisabeth Findlay

"Beyond the Gilded Frame: Portraits of Colonial Childhood"

This ART TALKS will be presented by Elisabeth Findlay, Professor of Art Theory at the Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University. Portraits of children are cherished possessions, freezing family moments in time. The Victorian era viewed childhood as a fleeting age of innocence, a precious stage of life. This talk steps into the world of the nineteenth century child and discusses portraits of Australian colonial childhood. It will delve into the many reasons for why we make portraits of children, from sentimental keepsakes to declarations of dynastic pride and generational authority

Elisabeth Findlay is a Professor of Art Theory at the Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University. She has held senior academic leadership positions at both Griffith University and The Australian National University. From 2020 to 2023 she was the first female Director of Queensland College of Art and Design and previously was an Associate Dean (Student Experience) in the College of Arts and Social Sciences at The Australian National University. She has extensive experience in internatoinal engagement and in 2019 was appointed as a Visiting Fellow at Shandong University of the Arts. Elisabeth is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Elisabeth lectures in the history of Australian art and theories of portraiture. She has received numerous teaching awards, including a national citation for her outstanding contribution to student learning and she is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research focuses on issues of identity, race, gender, class and nationalism in Australian visual culture. She has curated several exhibitions on early Australian colonial art. Elisabeth is currently completing the book publication 'Portraiture in Colonial Australia: Picturing the Nation' (under contract with Routledge).

This talk will be held at RQAS Brisbane Gallery on Sunday, 18th of October from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Afternoon tea is included in the ticket price.
