The Viva Energy AERO ( Advance Error Reduction in Organisations ) journey in improving Safety performance and engaging teams for the challenge – successes and lessons learnt

The Viva Energy - Geelong refinery Safety Manager, Damien Neal will present on the successful Viva Energy AERO    ( Advance Error Reduction in Organisations ) journey and the lessons learnt along the way.

Damien Neal was a key part of the successful introduction of Human Performance at Alcoa Rolled Products and has helped lead the introduction of AERO at Viva Energy .  The AERO safety program includes Human Performance with the addition of E-color methods. The Human Performance method examines the degree of conscious control exercised by the individual over his or her activities based on their experience and frequency with the task  - whether the mode is skill based, knowledge based or rule based.  The E-color method helps individuals learn about their behaviors in order to improve communication skills, build better relationships and work more safely and efficiently. Damien believes that believes the introduction of AERO methods at two organistions has had the greatest positive effect on Safety Culture and incident reduction.

Damien is the Safety Manager at the Viva Energy refinery as role he has held for 3 years.  His responsibilities include overseeing and guiding improvements is areas such as Fatality Prevention, Critical Hazard Management, Safety Leadership, Leading Indicator Recognition and Behavioural Change. Prior to Viva Energy,  Damien worked at Melbourne Water, Nufarm, Alcoa Rolled Products, Orica and Australian Vinyls Corporation as the Health & Safety Manager roles.

“Using technology to improve safety in the field” - Melbourne Water's journey to improve the life of field based workers

Almost every waking hour of every day , we access digital technology in the form of apps on phones and computers to make our lives easier.  Melbourne Water have successfully developed easier to use apps  to improve the life of their field workers , making it both safer and easier.

Gavin Kenny, Melbourne Water Manager SHEQ – Service Delivery will share the story of some of their excellent user friendly  apps:  Good To Go, Confined Space Entry, Field Assurance, Contractor Training log, virtual assistants and how they came about.  Each of these 5 apps were developed in a similar way:  Looking at their safety system elements , seeing what was complicated or where stuff was hard to find, or process didn’t work and then working with users to simplify the process, sometimes changing the rules, enabled improvement through technology in the field ie: the apps.

Shane Mitchell, from Melbourne Water will join Gavin to present an operational perspective.

Gavin Kenny is a 20 year Safety Professional that has started to challenge the historical Safety approaches. Gavin is now a passionate advocate for changing the safety industry by focusing on removing bureaucratic processes and implementing technologies that make it easier to do things safely.

Shane Mitchell has recently joined the Melbourne Water Safety Team after 8 years as an Operator at the Eastern Treatment Plant. He brings a practical operational view to the Safety Team.
