Off-Script! An intro to long-form improv

Learn to perform long-form improvisation with Auckland-based theatre company Improverished. We've been creating fully improvised narrative theatre shows for 10 years now and we decided it was finally time to run a course to share everything we’ve learned.

In this 6 week course, we will take you through the basics of how to do long-form improv. We'll cover such skills as creating characters, understanding story arc, and learning a specific show format.

What is ‘long-form' improv? Long-form is improvisational theatre where the performers create one story for the course of an extended run time rather than playing short games. Think less “Whose Line Is It Anyway” and more “Middleditch and Schwartz”

Here’s all the details you need to know:

• WHAT: Off-Script! Is a 6 week course developed especially by Improverished to teach you the core skills to get started in long-form narrative improvisation. You will learn one of our very own original improv formats and get the chance to perform for your friends and whānau.

• WHEN: Classes are Tuesday nights 15 July - 19 August from 6:45pm - 8:45pm with an (optional but encouraged) final performance on Saturday 23 August

• WHO: Everyone who has been learning improv for at least 1 year is welcome to attend this course. This is an intro level course so those who have performed in many long-form shows in the past may find we cover things you already know, however, we might not! This is our very own course developed and taught by Improverished so whether you’re learning for the first time or brushing up on your long-form skills you’re probably going to learn something new. • WHERE: All classes will be in Auckland CBD. Final performance will be at the Pumphouse Theatre coalbunker. Full address details will be sent to participants upon signup.

• COSTS: Accessibility is so important to us in Improverished so we are offering this course with a sliding scale payment option between $150-$180 for the full 6 week course, including the final performance. We have endeavoured to make this course as financially accessible as possible, which is a core part of everything we do.

• FINAL PERFORMANCE: The (optional!) final performance is a chance for you to have fun, get silly, and share what you’ve learned with your nearest and dearest. Plus a super exciting opportunity to learn and perform one of Improverished’s beloved original formats. There is no additional cost to participate in this performance. Audience members will need to purchase tickets for a very modest fee (tbc) of under $10 to support our wonderful venue partner
