Offshore Gas: The Whale in the room for Australian Governments
Event description
You would be shocked if you knew the enormous scale of some offshore gas exploration and development projects awaiting approval in Australia. The risk these projects pose to marine life, human beings, communities, the environment and climate is dire, and yet many are likely to go ahead unless we can shine a spotlight on them and the current defective state of government approval processes.Â
WEBINAR PANEL
- Yaraan Couzens Bundle: Gunditjmara Whale Dreaming Custodian and Coordinator of the Southern Ocean Protection Embassy Collective (SOPEC).
- Dr Kirsty Howey: Co-director of the Environment Centre Northern Territory and adjunct research fellow at the Northern Institute at Charles Darwin University.
- Professor Robert McCauley: School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering Curtin University. Expert in the impacts of sound on marine fauna.
- Markus Nolle: Director, Apollo Bay Fishermen’s Co-Op. Rock lobster fisherman turned advocate to prevent the destruction of marine life due to seismic testing.
- Maggie Wood: Acting Executive Director, Conservation Council of Western Australia. She is working to stop some of the largest fossil fuel developments in Australia from going ahead.Â
Help us to bring to the surface the devastating consequences such projects hold and get them the attention they deserve by joining this ACTION webinar. We’ve designed it to give you the information and confidence you need to bring this critical issue to the attention of your community and federal and state MPs.Â
Australia’s LNG exports are a far bigger contributor to global emissions than those counted by the Australian government. While Australia’s 2030 national emissions target has grabbed the headlines, gas exports contribute much more significantly to climate, environmental and cultural breakdown. These gas projects are supported by state and federal governments but offer little economic benefit to our country.Â
The webinar will provide snapshots of gas projects from the Northern Territory to Victoria’s Otways, highlighting their scale, impacts, and the campaigns to stop them. You’ll hear from a renowned marine scientist as well as leading first nation and key environmental campaigners from WA, NT and Western Victoria as they share accounts of the impacts offshore gas exploration is having in their communities, including the damage to climate, the environment, marine life and the lives of people living there. And there’ll be time for questions.Â
