Oktoberfest Cooking Class

Event description

From the Instructor:

Come celebrate with me in the Massachusetts Avenue Project Kitchen by learning to make this traditional German meal that my family makes each year to celebrate our German heritage during Oktoberfest. I have adapted aspects of the meal to meet our homesteading family ways and contemporary taste buds by making the Spätzle with Sourdough!! In this class you will engage with hands-on instruction to learn how to make a batch of sauerkraut. During that process I will be sharing the science and magic of Lacto-fermentation with you. You will also receive family recipes and watch cooking demonstrations for each element of the meal. We will have fun creating and eating samples of this meal together and by the end you will have a clear understanding of how to make this food and incorporate these ancestral food practices and traditions into your life. In addition to leaving class well fed, you will receive a small recipe book with a recipe for each part of the meal and a small jar of our house made kraut to enjoy.

This class is BYOB! Prost!

About the Instructor:

My name is Ashley Smith and I am a mamma, artist, health enthusiast, homesteader, mentor, and a self taught cook who loves to share what I have learned and practice with others. I have recently started a business called practical magic mentoring and I believe working with food is both practical and magical. Practices involving food are a doorway towards our individual and collective healing. Working contemplatively in the garden, kitchen, and at the dinner table with food is a way to deepen our relationship with the food we eat, ourselves, others, and the land we live on.

About the Venue:

Parking: Starting at 6 pm, you cannot park on the south side of Massachusetts Avenue (the same side as MAP). The parking rule changes right at 6, and there is no parking available right in front of MAP. There is usually parking available on side streets, Shields and Brayton (1 side of each street).

MAP Thursday Market: MAP will be hosting their Thursday Farmhouse Market from 3-6pm. They have a selection of fresh produce, as well as eggs, herbs, mushrooms, honey, flowers, preserved goods, beauty products, and more! Feel free to come early to check it out!

Please let us know if you have any food allergies or restrictions so we can make accommodations if possible!
