Event description

An introductory information webinar on older people's mental wellbeing and the high rates (per 100,000) of older people suicide. Hear an analysis of why mental distress and illness is predicted by World Health Organisation to be the most common health issues for future generations of older people.

The analysis and proven strategies will be offered by TaylorMade Training and Consulting's Principal Consultant, Barry Taylor who for 35 years has worked and provided leadership at the local, national and international levels to improve individual and community wellbeing and the prevention of suicide.

He will argue that mental distress is not the sole responsibility of primary health care or public mental health services and that worldwide both community and residential aged care and retirement village sectors are currently underprepared to adequately respond.

Based on his extensive experience of working in the areas of assisted dying and suicide prevention internationally, Barry will offer a critical analysis of the longer term impact and potential dilemmas arising with the recent enactment of the End of Life Choice Act 2019. There are significant ethical, duty of care, counselling and pastoral cares issues and dilemmas for community and residential aged care services and retirement village providers.

He will also give a brief overview of the key principles and determinants for an evidence-based framework for older peoples' wellbeing. In 2016 he was awarded the NSW Mental Health Commissioner's Community Champion Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to mental wellbeing and suicide prevention.

Take the opportunity to gain an overview of and ask questions about the Older People's Mental Wellbeing and Suicide Prevention 2022 training series. Hear how the consultancy, workforce development, programme development and evaluation services of Taylormade Training and Consulting can assist to address the issues covered in the webinar
