Event description

Prepare your ink, loosen your grip and experience the ancient Zen art of Ensō

The Ensō is a hand-drawn circle, typically done in one uninhibited brushstroke. Each unique artwork symbolises individuality and diversity in our society. This Japanese ink workshop beckons us into a state of self-reflection by inviting us to grind Sumi, traditional Japanese ink, then have a go creating our own Ensō circles.

Renowned artist Junko Azukawa will be leading the session. She grew up in Toyama, Japan, and began learning traditional Japanese calligraphy at five. She’ll guide you through the meditative process of preparing the ink, which encourages connection with nature, and deeper attunement with your surroundings—in this case the serene surrounds of Tadao Ando’s pavilion. Then she’ll take you through the ways of the Ensō. Once you’re done, you can take your creations home as a personal expression of the experience.
