Event description

Online abuse, harassment and gendered cyberhate are global, social and pervasive problems. GEN VIC and Digital Rights Watch have been working hard to bring attention to gendered online violence while remaining critical of state power, coercion and reactionary measures that do not address the root cause of the problem.

In this important online webinar, we will be talking about the newly announced Online Safety Act. This new piece of legislation is a first in Australia and is significant in the fight for a safe and gender equitable internet.

Hear from a panel of digital rights, technology and privacy experts who will discuss:

  • What is the Online Safety Act designed to do?
  • How does the Act propose to improve online safety?
  • Who (and what) does it include/exclude?
  • Are there any assumptions the Act makes?
  • Now that the Act is implemented, what do activists and the public need to be watchful of?
  • What other measures would be beneficial to keep people, especially those targeted by online abuse, safe online?

Our panelists include

  • Samantha Floreani, Project Lead, Digital Rights Watch
  • Kathryn Gledhill-Tucker, Board Member, Electronic Frontiers Australia
  • Eliza Sorensen, Co-founder, Assembly Four

Moderator

  • Caitlin McGrane, Project Lead, Gender Equity Victoria
