Session 1 Monday 28th August 2023, 3.00pm-6.30pm NZST

Session 2 Thursday 31St August 2023, 3.00pm-6.30pm NZST 

This workshop runs over two 3.5-hour sessions. Every speech pathologist working with children with speech sound disorder will have a list of conditions they prefer to treat. This event aims to move more conditions on to the list of favourites.

Single registration cost is for each individual, not per site. Each person must register and attendance is required for both sessions. Zoom will be used to deliver the training with “meeting room” details emailed to participants prior to each module. You will need to download Zoom software to your computer. A webcam and inbuilt microphone on your computer is also preferable so you can fully participate.

Sessions 1 and 2 will be RECORDED for later viewing if you can't make the "live" event and the recordings will be available for 7 days after each session.


Intended Participants

Registrants must be speech pathologists or speech pathology students who have undertaken relevant lectures/coursework/clinical placements in child and adolescent interventions and/or in disability. This workshop will be suitable for clinicians currently working with children with speech sound disorders.

Learning Objectives 

Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • describe the features and characteristics of a range of speech sound disorders occurring in children’s development in order to articulate strategies for differential diagnosis,
  • summarise assessment and intervention strategies for working with children with childhood apraxia of speech, dysarthria, cleft palate, phonological delay, phonological disorder, inconsistent phonological disorder and speech sound disorders with bilingual clients,
  • identify assessment and intervention considerations for specific diagnoses,
  • apply knowledge of assessment and intervention for speech sound disorders to diverse clinical populations.


About Dr Anna Cronin, Dr Sharon Crosbie, Dr Kieran Flanagan, and A/Professor Alison Holm

Anna Cronin is a lecturer of speech pathology, and academic, at the Australian Catholic University on the Brisbane campus. She is a certified practising speech pathologist and currently works with preschool aged children in the community, as well as teaching. Anna received her PhD in 2020 from Charles Sturt University, for which she received the university medal for a higher degree by research. Dr Cronin has extensive experience working clinically as a speech pathologist with children with cleft and craniofacial conditions and their families.

Sharon Crosbie is a Senior Lecturer of speech pathology at the ACU on the Brisbane campus. Sharon is a certified practising speech pathologist and works with primary school children in the school setting. Her research interests are clinically driven and include speech and language development and disorder in children. Sharon completed her PhD in 2002 at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). Her research investigated psycholinguistic models to understand comprehension skills of children with DLD.

Kieran Flanagan is a speech pathologist with almost 20 years' experience working in a combination of clinical practice, research and university teaching. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Speech Pathology at Australian Catholic University Brisbane campus. The majority of Kieran’s career has been spent working with children with complex speech sound disorders such as childhood apraxia of speech and dysarthria. Dr Flanagan has presented numerous professional development events for paediatric motor speech disorders. 

Alison Holm is an Associate Professor of speech pathology at the University of Tasmania. She is a certified practising speech pathologist with clinical expertise and significant research experience in the area of monolingual English and multilingual children’s speech and language development and disorder. Alison has worked extensively with Professor Barbara Dodd and Dr Sharon Crosbie on assessment, differential diagnosis and intervention for children with speech sound disorders.
