Writing Like a Writer: How to Make Your Ideas Shine

Have you always loved writing? Do you enjoy inventing exciting characters and plots? Would you like to practice your skills and develop your talents even further?

In this two-hour livestream, students in Years 6-8 will have the opportunity to learn from Deborah Abela, author of 30 books, as she takes you through a series of challenging and fun writing activities, where you will explore the writing process from developing ideas to planning outlines and, most importantly, creating characters and plots readers will love.

The session will include dedicated writing time, giving students the chance to put their ideas into practice, as well as an opportunity to ask Deb questions about writing, storytelling and life as an author.

Can't make the live session? We understand that school timetables can be busy. A recording of the workshop will be made available so you and your students can participate at a time that suits your classroom. Registration is still essential to receive access to the recording.

What to expect

  • An engaging and interactive writing workshop with Deborah Abela.

  • Creative writing activities with dedicated time for students to write.

  • A 10-minute break halfway through the session.

  • An opportunity for students to have their questions answered by Deb.

More about...
Deborah Abela - Dip Teach, BA (Comm)
Children’s Author, Speaker, Teacher

Deborah trained as a teacher before becoming a writer/producer of a national children’s TV show at Network TEN. She then went to Africa, where she was harassed by monkeys, got caught in a desert sandstorm, and was thrown in jail twice. Since then, she’s become an internationally published and awarded author of 30 books, including her climate change trilogy, Grimsdon, New City and Final Storm. The Stupendously Spectacular Spelling Bee and The Most Marvellous Spelling Bee Mystery were inspired by her grade 4 teacher, Miss Gray. She wrote the CBCA Notable books, Bear in Space, The Book of Wondrous Possibilities, and The Kindness Project, where four kids try to change the world with a school project. Deb won awards for her work but mostly hopes to be as brave as her characters.
