Only Ugly Guys
Event description
Depravity and enlightenment, protection and liberation, love bombing / situationships / ghosting / et al – “Only Ugly Guys” delivers a stark reflection on how affection manifests in a non-committal, algorithm-fueled culture. Told through four short stories from the unique, unreliable perspective of each character, “Only Ugly Guys” experiments with what theater can be, using modern romance as its medium. Placing the audience in the role of voyeur, confidante, enabler, and friend, these scenarios interrogate, “When you have access to anything, what do you really want?”
Age Recommendation & Content Awareness:
The characters, like people in real life, are complicated. The characters swear, have sex, use recreational drugs, are partial nude, and are sometimes not very nice.

Reviews from World Premiere (2024):
"See the funny, clever, inventive, and very modern Only Ugly Guys at Open Eye Theater in South Minneapolis...and get a glimpse of the next generation of theater makers." - Cherry and Spoon
"Hilarious and deeply introspective, the play centers around the relationships between the four characters as they search for love and connections while navigating the struggles of dating and modern life. " - MN Daily
"Though, in fact, the play, even at its most jokey–and there are wonderful laugh lines throughout–has the ring of reality all along, and the four actors bring authenticity to their characters, all of which makes Only Ugly Guys well worth a trip to the Open Eye. This is a short run, but I wouldn't be surprised if Open Eye brings the play back or another theatre company welcomes this production." - Talkin' Broadway
