Open Christchurch 2023: Dorset Street Flats (Saturday)
Event description
OPEN CHRISTCHURCH 2023: 1Dorset Street Flats
Architects: F. M. Warren A.N.Z.I.A, 1956-57 (later Warren & Mahoney); Young Architects, 2021
Radical in its time and enduring in its historical importance, Sir Miles Warren’s Dorset St Flats marked the beginnings of a new type of residential living and a style soon to be synonymous with our city: Christchurch Modern. These purpose-designed city dwellings sing with Brutalism. Exposed load-bearing concrete block walls, concrete beams and axial planning are material proof of a young architect developing his vocabulary and honing his craft. The flats remain one of the most important residential buildings in NZ from the twentieth century.
