    Event description

Moorunde Wildlife Reserve was established in 1968 following a successful fund-raising campaign in response to a severe drought in 1967 when wombats were dying of starvation.

The reserve was managed by members of the Natural History Society of SA Inc. (formed in 1960) on a purely volunteer basis and has been so ever since.
The Society is now called Wombats SA, as the Protection and Preservation of Wombats and their environment is the main activity.

Since the establishment of Moorunde WR, Wombats SA has acquired 5 other Reserves and the total area is around 7,772 ha.
We preserve and protect an estimated 3000+ wombats
plus many other species of animals with many types of plants on the reserves.
Click to see our Website for more details of the reserves:

We invite members of the public to view this exercise in practical conservation
preserving the habitat of the Southern Hairy-nosed wombat, the fauna emblem of South Australia.
