Event description

From 2000 – 2013 a sub-festival of This is Not Art, titled Sound Summit (previously The National Independent Labels Conference) existed to support the artists, labels and people that work and play in the world of innovative independent music both from Australia and abroad. 2006 saw Sound Summit become a key project for MusicNSW, New South Wales’ Music Association for contemporary artists and industry, and throughout the year’s the festival showcased the most exciting acts from around the world, including Anticon (DoseOne, Jel, Sole), Hrvatski, Ghislain Poirier, Gorky, Lucky Dragons, Mount Eerie, Cotti, Aloe Blacc, Freq Nasty, Ariel Pink, Kevin Blechdom, Sage Francis, Manitoba (Caribou), Mad Professor, Ducktails, Pumice, MONO, Moon Duo & Wet Hair.

This open meeting, held in Lab Eleven at Clyde Street Studios, is a call out to independent and experimental musicians of the Hunter region to initiate a conversation about how a program or conference like this could be reinitiated in Newcastle – one of the nation’s most idiosyncratic and innovative music scenes.
