Opioid substitution treatment in prisons: Strategic approaches to reducing morbidity and mortality

This webinar will discuss maximising opportunities to reduce drug related deaths in and after prison.
This talk will provide an overview of work done to understand and tackle drug related deaths in and after prison. It will briefly describe the program of work over the past decade and will explore some recent modelling work. It will also discuss opportunities for further developments arising from the advent of new formulations of depot buprenorphine that may increase treatment coverage in and after prison.

Professor Michael Farrell, Director of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), UNSW Sydney.
Since 2011 Professor Michael Farrell has been Director of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New South Wales where he has led a research team of approximately 100 staff. The focus of the work is on tobacco, alcohol and other drug issues with both policy and intervention questions.
He is a member of the World Health Organisation Expert Committee on Drug Dependence since 1993. He is an editor of the Cochrane Collaboration on Alcohol and other Drugs. He has consulted to numerous national governments including the Irish Government and has undertaken work with the United Nations Office on Drug Control. He is the Faculty Lead for the Research theme of Neuroscience, Mental Health, Addiction and Ageing. He is also the President of The Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol & other Drugs (APSAD).
Over the past 30 years he has worked with many Non-Governmental Agencies in a voluntary capacity as Chair or Board Director to support the development of community-based organisations for this sector.
