Opportunities for an Inclusive Housing System
Event description
The Rights & Inclusion Australia 2021 Housing Forum has the theme of Opportunities for an Inclusive Housing System. Since the decision on 30 April this year by the Building Ministers Meeting to include the Livable Housing Provisions (Silver Level) as mandatory requirements in the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022, the NSW and South Australian Governments have decided to exercise their option to vary out of this. Instead both governments are opting to continue with their voluntary approach.
The forum will challenge the decision of NSW and SA to opt out, by considering:
- The benefits to consumers of a unified, national approach to accessibility in housing
- The benefits to the building industry and suppliers of uniform regulation across jurisdictions
- How supportive jurisdictions will implement the NCC from September 2022
- How building professionals can adapt to develop housing to the new guidelines
Due to COVID, the event this year will be held online. Speakers and presenters confirmed to date are:
- The Hon. Rebecca Vassarotti, ACT Minister for Sustainable Building and Construction
- Dr Margaret Ward PSM, Co-Convenor, Australian Network on Housing Design (ANUHD)
- Mr Neil Savery, CEO, Australian Building Codes Board
- Mr Andrew Kerec, Director, Renaissance Building and Design Pty Ltd, ACT
- Mr Alistair Webster, Campaign Director, Building Better Homes Campaign
- Mr Michael Fox AM, Chair Rights & Inclusion Australia
