Hidden Orchids of Black Mountain

Led by guide Dr Ryan O’Donnell, this first walk in our Queer Trails and Tales program will introduce participants to the rich and diverse orchid flora of Australia, along with its fascinating ecology and the evolution on one of our most conspicuous geographic landmarks, Black Mountain. Did you know that there are more orchid species in Canberra alone than there are in the entire United Kingdom? This and more will be discussed on the tour!

Canberra Environment Centre's 'Queer Trails and Tales' is a series of six guided nature walks celebrating Canberra’s landscapes, wildlife and biodiversity through a queer lens. Led by local experts, each walk brings together science, storytelling and community to explore the fascinating diversity of the natural world.

Numbers are capped at 15 people, so be sure to book before it's too late!

Learn about Dr Ryan O'Donnell

Dr. Ryan O’Donnell is a mycologist, botanist, and postdoctoral researcher at the Research School of Biology at the Australian National University. Ryan’s research is predominantly focused on the evolution of the Australian orchid flora and its mycorrhizal funga. More broadly, Ryan’s research interests span genomics, systematics, taxonomy, and evolutionary ecology, particularly with respect to the evolution of symbiosis. Before commencing their PhD, Ryan completed a Master of Scientific Studies at the University of New England (UNE), where their research focused on the taxonomy, systematics, and conservation of Australian mintbushes (Prostanthera; Lamiaceae). Prior to their scientific work, Ryan’s experience was in the performing, visual, and creative arts, where they enjoyed separate careers employed as a Conservatorium-trained opera singer and filmmaker. 

Accessibility considerations

The Black Mountain walk is mostly flat; however, the ground is rocky and uneven in places, which may present challenges for people with limited mobility.

However, we will work to accommodate accessibility requirements wherever possible. If there is anything we can do to support your participation, you can provide further information when you register.

Safety considerations

We would recommend participants wear sturdy, close-toed, flat-soled shoes. We also recommend long pants and long socks, along with adequate sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses). Also bring water to ensure adequate hydration.

Light refreshments will be provided following the walk. Dietary requirements will be requested when you register.
