Original Production by Gabby and Nani, SRP Event

In term 3, two Senior Research Projects are coming together to create something special: a fully original, student-driven theatre production that will take place on Monday the 27th of July 5pm and Wednesday the 29th of July 5pm.

Nani has written The Haunting of Orpheus Parker, a young adult coming-of-age play following Orpheus, a trans boy in his final year of high school, as he navigates bullying, friendship, and a fractured relationship with his mother, all while being haunted by visions of his pre-transition self. Set in a modern Australian high school, the play explores identity, grief, and self-acceptance, building toward a hopeful conclusion as Orpheus learns to let go of the past and embrace who he is. Orpheus Parker is a shorter piece written alongside Nani's main SRP, a longer horror, mystery and coming-of-age work that forms the central focus of her research.

Gabby is taking on the challenge of bringing the script to life as their own SRP, producing and directing the production while also designing the costumes, set, and lighting. Their research has focused on how each element of stagecraft, lighting, set, costume, and direction, works together to support storytelling, and they're putting that research into practice by building a production that is as close to entirely student-made as possible. The cast is made up mostly of Year 12 drama students, along with two Year 12s outside the drama elective and two younger students from Year 10 who volunteered to join the show. Students are also running the stage crew and helping paint sets, with two teachers lending a hand with set building and lighting rigging.

For Gabby, this project is a chance to get hands-on experience in the backstage side of theatre, the area they're most passionate about and hope to pursue after school.
