Otaraua Community Planting Day
Event description
Nau Mai, Haere Mai!
Groundtruth- WJ4N and Te Ati Awa ki Whakarongotai invite you and your whānau to this community planting day focused on the regeneration of Otaraua. Help us to plant over 5000 trees, hear kōrero about Otaraua, explore the arawai (waterways), have some kai with your community and share your thoughts on the vision for Otaraua.
Otaraua is a special place for whānau, hapū and iwi to strengthen bonds to the whenua. As our land and water improve, so do we.
Come and celebrate the Mahi mō te Taiao/Jobs for Nature mahi that's already happened in Otaraua, and be a part of creating positive change for our community and whenua. Drop in anytime between 10am-4pm, plant trees, have a kapū ti and a kōrero, we’ll be firing up the BBQ at midday.
All welcome! This is an event for the whole whānau. Registrations much appreciated so we have an idea of kai needed, and for cancellation/ postponement notifications. Parking is available.
WJ4N
WJ4N is a Te Ati Awa ki Whakarongotai initiative working alongside conservation partners, with major focus on Waikanae Awa and catchment. We encourage locals to observe and interact with te Taiao, to gain better knowledge and understanding. As our Taiao improves, the people within our community improve! This event is in partnership with Mountains to Sea Wellington, DOC, Kapiti Coast District Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Enviroschools.
Explore the Wai
Mountains to Sea Wellington’s Wai Connection team will be running sessions exploring the arawai and roto of Otaraua at the event. Learn about the tuna living in the lake, the freshwater fish highway, and the wetland areas of Otaraua. You can also take part in an eDNA assessment, and give water quality monitoring a go!
