Our Ocean: A New Zealand Outlook (Auckland)

Aotearoa has a unique and globally important marine environment, with many endemic species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. But our marine reserves cover only 0.48 percent of our oceans. Human impacts through fishing, mining and oil and gas exploration, plastic pollution and loss of habitat are a real threat to our ocean life.
The 2021 documentary Seaspiracy launched social media into a frenzy with its brutal exposé of human impacts on ocean life and the unsustainability of modern fishing practices. But it also received backlash for being scientifically inaccurate, failing to represent sustainable indigenous fishing practices or recognise the world’s growing demand for food.
How do we compare to the rest of the world? What steps can we take individually to tackle the problems facing our ocean? Come and learn about the effects of our lifestyles and industries on the oceans, and what truly sustainable fishing practices are available to us.
We invite you to join a discussion with Dr Andrew Jeffs of Auckland University’s Institute of Marine Science, and Veronica Rotman, Sustainable Seas National Science Panel Member and microplastics expert, on Wednesday 4 August 2021 at GridAKL.
The Social Change Collective welcome all to this free event in the Auckland Community. Doors open at 6.00pm and the event will start at 6.15pm.
