Event description

Volunteers wanted! Come help us create oyster reefs! We will be using drill presses to drill holes into oyster shells that will be used in future volunteer programs to make Vertical Oyster Gardens and Oyster Anchors. VOGs will be installed under docks and other structures to provide a surface for live oysters to attach themselves.  The Oyster Anchor pins will be inserted into the Manatee River bottom. This is a crucial step in making oyster reefs and you can help make a difference in the health of our ecosystem. Oysters feed by filtering and cleaning water, a key to a healthy estuary and our marine ecosystems. Clean water allows the sunlight to penetrate the sea floor, allowing sea grasses to grow, which helps all creatures, including manatees!

We will meet at the main staircase to the NEST and walk over to the nearby pavilion. Long-sleeved lightweight clothing is recommended. Ice water, gloves, safety glasses, dust masks and all other materials will be provided. Please bring a water bottle.

For more information, please contact Volunteer Coordinator, Shelby Reece, at (941) 748-4501 ext. 6035 or Shelby.Reece@mymanatee.org
