Paekawakawa Community Hīkoi
Event description
Come along for an afternoon of walking, talking and discovering how our neighbourhoods connect - from the headwaters of the Paekawakawa stream in Berhampore all the way down to the coast at Island Bay.
Led by Stu Farrant, ecological engineer and water-sensitive design lead at Morphum Environmental, with mana whenua and local hosts, this guided hīkoi will bring together histories, science and lived experience. We’ll look at how the streams, valleys and coastline have changed since the 1800s, what that means for our community and environment today, and how climate change might shape things in the future.
Get outside, meet people and see familiar places in a new light. You’ll leave with a better understanding of how our catchment is shaped by past changes, how climate-related challenges affect our neighbourhood, and the opportunities for adapting and building resilience from the hills to the sea — ki uta ki tai.
When: Sunday 16 November, 1–4pm
Start: Liardet Street Park, Berhampore
Finish: Island Bay Beach
The walk is suitable for most fitness levels and follows mostly gentle paths. It will take around three hours to complete, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Please contact us if you have specific accessibility needs.
