Painting clothes workshop
Event description
Learn how to turn an old t-shirt or second-hand jacket into a unique hand-painted piece!
We will be painting onto clothing using fabric medium, creating a unique and washable clothing item. You can bring an item of clothing you already own or pick from the second-hand clothes I bring along.
All levels of experience are welcome! There will be stencils and help if you want direction, but you'll also be able to do your own thing... or anything in between! If you have an idea of something specific that you want to paint, please bring along a printout of it.
What to bring...
You don't need to bring anything as I'll be bringing a bunch of t-shirts in various sizes ...but I can't ensure I'll have something that fits you, so here's what I'd recommend:
What to look for
• Labels that say 100% cotton are perfect.
• Look for natural fibres like linen, rayon, and cotton.
• Look for something plain so your design stands out.
• Plain t-shirts and denim are great options.
What to avoid
• The most important thing is that the fabric doesn’t stretch much, so if you pull the fabric and it stretches, then try to find something else.
• Natural fibres work better than synthetic ones.
Where to look
Ideally, you'll find something that you already own or can get second-hand. A great place to start is your own wardrobe. Is there something you don’t wear much anymore that you'd wear more with a design? Op shops are another great place to look; it might take a few tries to find something, so start looking soon!
Tips
• It could be a good opportunity to save something with a stain, e.g., if you have a stained white T-shirt, you could cover the stain with your design.
• Think about what you are likely to wear again – if you hate T-shirts, find something else - we want your item to be worn!
• It can be worth looking in both the women's and men's sections of op shops. You might find something you like, and often all the plain T-shirts end up in the men's section.
• Wash your item beforehand.
