Painting from Pleinair to Studio Term 4

Combine the immediacy of drawing and painting en Pleinair with a considered and controlled studio approach.

Class structure: 9 weeks, each Wednesday 10am-1pm

Level: Intermediate

The Pleinair to studio class allows students to go outside for 3 or 4 weeks and produce Pleinair works on paper and paintings. Students will then bring these works back to the studio and create larger works from these Pleinair observations.

Michael Herron has been a practicing artist in Sydney for over 35 years and a teacher for the past 30 years. Michael’s qualifications include BA (Visual Arts), City Art Institute, UNSW, and TAFE Certificate of Fine Art.

Materials List

• Sketchbook or visual diary

• Drawing pencils: HB, 2B, 4B

• Kneaded eraser

• Pencil sharpener

• Small ruler

• Bulldog clips or masking tape

• Portable palette

• Palette knife

• Small water container or brush-washing jar

• Paper towel or reusable rags

• Wet-paint carrier or palette box

• Garbage bags / zip-lock bags for waste and storage

Brushes

Start with a small selection rather than a large set:

• 2–3 small detail brushes

• 2 medium flat or filbert brushes

• 1 larger flat or wash brush

• 1 round brush

• A separate brush-cleaning container

Surface

Choose according to the medium:

• Oil: oil-primed or acrylic-primed canvas panels

• Acrylic: acrylic paper, canvas panels, or gessoed board

• Watercolour: watercolour paper, preferably 300 gsm

Bring several small surfaces rather than one large one. Approximately A4 or 8 × 10 in is a good beginner size.
