POSTPONED: Evolvement of Australian Gothic Literature

In 1856, Frederick Sinnett claimed that Australia could never be a natural home for Gothic literature. "Mrs. Radcliffe's genius [The Mysteries of Udolpho, 1794] would be quite thrown away here," he somewhat rashly suggested (The Fiction Fields of Australia). However, Australia has since proved a more-than-natural habitat for the Gothic.

In this talk, writer Kate Austin-Raffan takes a closer look at the evolvement of the genre. Using examples from contemporary Australian Gothic writing, she reflects that in truth Radcliffe would have found much here to be inspired by.

This event will be held at Don Bank Museum.
