Join artist Elysha Rei for a hands-on workshop exploring paper cutting as both a practical technique and a way of thinking through photographs, memory and the archive.
Beginning with an introduction to the history and traditions of paper cutting, participants will learn foundational cutting skills, including safe knife handling, control, positive and negative space, line, shape and the structural possibilities of working with a single sheet of paper.
Drawing on Rei’s own contemporary paper-cutting practice, the workshop will then move beyond technique to consider what happens when we begin to remove information from an image. Working with copies of archival and personal photographs, participants will experiment with selectively cutting away parts of an image to shift its meaning, draw attention to overlooked details, create absence, or explore ideas of memory, erasure, presence and loss.
Through discussion, experimentation and guided making, participants will develop their own paper-cut response to a photographic image, considering not only how to cut, but why particular elements are retained or removed.
A selection of photographic images will be provided. Participants are also encouraged to bring photocopies or printed copies of their own photographs to work with. Please do not bring original or irreplaceable photographs, as images will be physically cut during the workshop.
No previous paper-cutting experience is required.
