Paper Launch: A Digital Inclusion Approach to Device Donation and Reuse

Join us for the launch of the ADIA’s paper, ‘A Digital Inclusion Approach to Device Donation and Reuse’, in conversation with WorkVentures, ACCAN and the Australian Government’s First Nations Digital Inclusion Advisory Group.

Access to an appropriate device is fundamental to being digitally included, and enables participation in a range of online activities that have become synonymous with everyday life. This includes access to government services, banking, telehealth, studying and finding or undertaking employment.

Device donation and reuse poses a solution to both the challenges of digital inclusion and environmental sustainability, but not without complexities. Over the past year the ADIA has been developing a paper looking at the various aspects of device donation and reuse, and the ways in which organisations - small and large, public and private - can increase the pipeline of devices available to those who need them most. The paper will be launched with the support of WorkVentures' Caroline McDaid and ACCAN’s Tanya Karliychuk, two of the many stakeholders whose experiences from the consumer and organisation perspective helped shape the paper. We are delighted to also be joined by Ms Dot West OAM to share the First Nations Digital Inclusion Advisory Group’s perspective on the establishment of a National Device Bank.

Additionally we will welcome The Smith Family’s Head of Policy and Programs, Wendy Field, as our guest moderator for this event. Wendy will facilitate a panel discussion focused on a range of issues associated with device reuse, including the demand, challenges with donation, opportunities for consumers, and policy levers to address the demand. Q&A to follow the discussion.

    About the ADIA

The Australian Digital Inclusion Alliance (ADIA) is a shared initiative with over 500 business, government, academic and community organisations working together to accelerate action on digital inclusion. Our member organisations conduct a variety of research and practical programs aimed at reducing the digital divide and enabling greater social and economic participation for all Australians. The ADIA is supported by Infoxchange, Google, Telstra and TasNetworks. Australia Post was also a founding partner.

The ADIA’s vision is to build a digitally inclusive Australia where everyone is equipped to fully participate in the economy and society. Being digitally included means a person has:

    • Affordable access to quality internet and appropriate devices.
    • Access to inclusively designed online content, that’s readable and accessible, including if they are differently abled or from culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds.
    • The knowledge, ability, skills and confidence to complete tasks safely and securely online.
