Parakuihi Pakihi with Ruka Te Moana: Māori Energy Futures in Taranaki

Join He Toronga Pakihi ki Taranaki for our last Parakuihi Pakihi of 2026 with Ruka Te Moana of Te Piringa Pūngao for a morning of kai, connection and kōrero about Māori-led renewable energy futures in Taranaki.

Ruka Te Moana is the Pou Urungi and Managing Director of Te Piringa Pūngao, a Māori-led renewable energy development company based in Taranaki.

With experience across education, energy, business development and project management, including 15 years in the oil and gas sector, Ruka brings a practical perspective to creating stronger economic, social and environmental outcomes for whānau, hapū and iwi.

Te Piringa Pūngao works alongside whānau, hapū, iwi, marae, land trusts and community organisations to develop energy projects that reflect their aspirations, with a focus on long-term Māori ownership, affordable energy, resilience and intergenerational value.

At this Parakuihi Pakihi, Ruka will share the story behind Te Piringa Pūngao and explore opportunities for Māori businesses, marae, hapū, iwi and whenua trusts within Aotearoa’s changing energy sector. The kōrero will cover practical pathways in solar generation, wind, geothermal, batteries, microgrids, energy sharing and partnerships with industry, alongside the importance of advocacy, relationships, capability and collective action in turning long-term aspirations into investable projects.

He piringa mō te ao, he pūngao mō ngā uri whakatipu — A bond for today, energy for future generations.
