Event description

Being a parent or carer of a young person can be very challenging. This talk delivered from the perspective of a young person, is designed to facilitate parents and caregivers of young people with an understanding of the challenges faced by young people in this modern world. Tools will be provided that are immediately actionable for everyday life situation. The talk will be fun, interactive, evidence based, and with practical tools to apply.

Learning outcomes:

  • To understand how your relationship with your young person shapes their brain both now and in the future;
  • To have key take away tools to effectively engage with your young person at an age appropriate level;
  • To identify what things parents can do to facilitate wellbeing in young people;
  • To know how to deal with difficult situations with your young person, including conflict, boundary pushing, and rule testing;
  • How to build resilience in young people including getting the balance right between providing support and doing too much for your child.

About David Collins

David is a doctoral trained clinical psychologist who has worked with young people for many years. He has worked in a variety of settings, including private practice and public mental health. He has also been an honorary research fellow at the University of Melbourne.

David has designed and delivered training for Orygen, The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health, which is the peak body of youth mental health in Australia. David has also developed resources for The Raising Children Network, one of Australia’s preeminent parenting resources. David also developed Braingrow, a whole of school wellbeing program being ran throughout Australia.

He has delivered training for teachers, psychologists, counsellors, parents, and students across Australia. David specialises in practical and entertaining workshops that attempt to distil the complex nature of the brain into something immediately understandable and usable.
