Event description

Are you a leader in a sports or recreation organisation? Do you want to learn about the best ways to support the inclusion of people with intellectual and cognitive disability in your work and activities?

The Pass it to me! online workshop brings together professionals from the disability and sports sector, and people with disability, to introduce the ways sports and recreational clubs can drive disability inclusion.

The online workshop will run on three different dates, so you can choose the date and time that works best for you:

  • 29th April 11:00am-12:30pm AEST
  • 3rd May 11:0am-12:30pm AEST
  • 24th May 11:00am-12:30pm AEST

Workshop Overview
For people with disability, opportunities to get involved in sport, recreation, and active life have grown hugely in the past thirty years. In Australia, our Paralympic heroes, Wheelchair AFL and the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour are no longer in the shadows. All Abilities competitions are thriving around the country, and the NDIS and other funding has made it easier for people to find regular support to get to training, participate in recreation, and try new ways to exercise and make active friends.

People with intellectual disability have not had the same experience of inclusion in the world of popular sport – particularly mainstream local sport and recreation.

Pass it to me! Guide

The Pass it to me! online workshop aims to raise awareness of gaps, rights, opportunities, emerging solutions, and benefits related to inclusion of people with intellectual and cognitive disability in local Australian sport and recreation clubs. The workshop will:

  • outline key barriers experienced by Australians with intellectual and cognitive disability in accessing sport and recreation opportunities
  • introduce the recently launched Pass it to Me! guide which explores key insights and practical steps that sports and recreation clubs and organisations across Australia can take to drive disability inclusion
  • answer questions about legal and regulatory responsibilities, how to fund support, and the role of the NDIS

Presenters across the three workshops include:

  • Nathan Despott (Outstanding Leader of the Year – 2023 National Disability Awards)
  • Therese Dogra (Freedom Solutions Australia)
  • Matt Haanappel OAM (Paralympian and project advisor)
  • Jack Richardson (Project advisor)
  • John McKenna (Project advisor)
  • Tracey Watters (CEO, TAD SA)
  • Kerry Townsend (Project Advisor)

Presented by Inclusion Melbourne and Freedom Solutions Australia. Supported by South East Water.
