    Sanctuary magazine and the Australian Passive House Association (APHA) bring you a discussion with Passive House experts, focusing on the basics of the Passive House standard and how these high-performing, low-energy homes can be achieved on a reasonable budget. If you have money to build a house, you can afford a Passive House.

    Speakers

    Andy Marlow, Passivhaus Design & Construct and Envirotecture

    Andy is a Director at Passivhaus Design & Construct and Envirotecture, holds both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Architecture, is a certified Passive House Designer and has extensive experience in sustainable design at a variety of scales. He has led master planning projects, been involved in several successful competitions including the Bathurst Sustainable Living House, designed Sydney’s first Certified Passive House and led the materials research for Australia’s first certified Living Building. Andy believes all people should live, work and play in buildings that make them happy and healthy. His ‘day job’ focuses on ensuring people with reasonable budgets get into the best homes possible through a focus on health, comfort and efficiency in all its meanings. He is also a volunteer director at the Australian Passive House Association.

    Simone Schenkel, Gruen Eco Design

    Simone is a certified Passive House designer whose mission is to make energy efficient homes a staple in the Australian landscape. Everyone should have the right to live in a comfortable house that does not cost the earth! She has used the passion, experience and knowledge she gained from her upbringing and architectural studies in Germany to create Gruen Eco Design, a business where she works with her clients to create not only beautifully designed homes but also homes that are affordable, healthy, thermally comfortable, energy efficient and resilient for future generations. Simone loves making the world a better place by improving the way houses are built. And helping others to live a more sustainable life.

    Ben Caine, Leanhaus

    Ben is an Architect and Passive House Designer with a passion for lean design and construction. After 12 years at top tier design, construction and property development firms, Ben saw the need to create a better method of delivering great design and high performance for more than just the 1%. By adopting lean design and construction Ben believes good design can allow more people to live healthy, low impact lives. He founded Leanhaus in 2018 and is currently working across a range of new building types ranging in budget from $400,000 to $7m. Ben’s past commercial projects have been highly awarded by the Institute of Architects, and he is a past councillor of the Australian Institute of Architects (WA) and a regular Juror for AIA Awards.

    Burkhard Hansen, CarbonLite

    Passive House builder Burkhard has almost two decades’ experience in Passive House construction and precision prefabrication. Originally from Germany, he completed his apprenticeship and gained Passive House professional experience as a master craftsman in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, United Kingdom and New Zealand before immigrating to Melbourne in 2011. Burkhard founded CarbonLite in 2013, a company specialising in efficient prefabricated construction and guaranteeing Passive House performance using PanelLite, a Passive Haus Institut certified component. Burkhard is a licensed Master Builder and Certified Passive House Tradesperson as well as an accredited blower door tester. He is one of the few people in the country who has completed the Train The Trainer course with the Passiv Haus Institut in Germany and currently teaches the Passive House Tradesperson Course at Box Hill Institute in Melbourne. Additionally, Burkhard was part of the Steering Committee which developed the Diploma of Project Management for Prefabricated Building Systems.
