Portraits in Pastel Workshop - a refresher on skills and technique

A Weekend Workshop 22nd I& 23rd May, 2027: 8.30 set up for 9am start to 4pm

MEMBER: $245

NON-MEMBER; $295

The aim of this workshop is to sharpen observation skills and the artists imagination with many different subjects and to arm them with the skills to create their choice of artwork.

Suits beginners, and experienced artists will be challenged

Day 1

Demonstrations and exercises on:

  • Method of application of pastel to appropriate pastel paper

  • Tone or value control

  • Colour mixing games

  • Perspective on buildings and distance

  • Observation on still life subjects like glass, shiny items

  • Water, reflections or waves

  • Flowers from life

Day 2

Create portraits of your choice of subjects. Demonstrations on request

Materials List

Materials you can bring or purchase during the workshop:

Paper:

  • Art Spectrum Colourfix or Canson Mi Tientes or other good quality pastel paper

  • Size: 2 full sheets although half sheets usually suit workshop purposes 

Pastels:

  • A range of colours from dark to light of hard and soft pastels, but NOT oil pastels 

Other items:

  • Charcoal pencil and/or willow stick

  • Pastel pencils if you have them. Not essential. 

  • Kneadable eraser or putty rubber

  • Tape and clips

  • Mahl stick is optional

  • Notebook or sketch book if you are a note-taker, ruler 

  • Brush to remove excess pastel dust and an old hand towel

  • Paper towel 

  • Backing board

  • Easel - there are easels available to borrow at the venue. 

PHOTOS

  •  Bring reference photos if you want.

  • I have a large selection of suitable photos.

For still life exercises:

  • A plain round glass jar or bottle, something shiny like the silver jug from a coffee maker, a kettle (there’s probably one or two at the venue) or shiny copper vase etc.,

For Sale:

Pastel paper, pastels, pastel pencils, putty rubbers, clips, rulers, mahl sticks and charcoal

For Hire:

Sets of pastels including pastel pencils are $10/day/person
