Patents 102: Patent Searching

Jeremy will follow-on from his workshop that he delivered with UCE during Semester1, to provide further details on how to search for existing patents and how you can try to ensure that your idea / innovation has freedom to operate, without impinging on existing patents.

Trade Marks 101

In this session, Kavinna will provide an introductory overview of trade marks and discuss different stages of trade mark protection including choosing strong trade marks, clearance searching and the registration process in New Zealand and overseas.

About Dr Jeremy Robertson

Jeremy is an Australian and New Zealand qualified patent attorney and Australian trade marks attorney. Based in Christchurch, Jeremy is a member of the Intellectual Property and Technology practice group at Dentons and provides patent services to a range of local and international clients. Jeremy is available to work with clients throughout the South Island and beyond.

Jeremy has an Honours degree and a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Canterbury. His PhD focused on active enhancement technology in transdermal drug delivery.

Before joining Dentons in 2023, Jeremy worked for over four years as an Intellectual Property Engineer at a large medical devices company in New Zealand. This experience provides Jeremy with an excellent understanding of the value of intellectual property strategy and how to effectively identify opportunities for patent protection.

About Kavinna Dhepyasuwan:

Kavinna is an Associate in the Intellectual Property team at Dentons and is based in the Christchurch office. Kavinna regularly helps startups from a range of different industries with brand protection locally and internationally. She is experienced in all stages of trade mark protection, including clearance searches, filing strategy, prosecution and enforcement.

Before joining Dentons in 2022, Kavinna worked for over three years as an IP lawyer at a boutique IP firm in New Zealand.
