Peers Social Skills Course: A 16-Week Program for Teens (Ages 13-18)
Event description
A 16-Week Program for Teens (Ages 13-18)
Are you a teen who finds socialising challenging? Whether it’s starting conversations, making new friends, or understanding group dynamics, we’re here to help you build the skills and confidence you need to thrive in social settings.
The Peers Social Skills Course is a 16-week program designed specifically for teens aged 13-18 who experience difficulties with socialising. This includes teens with social anxiety, autism, ADHD, or those who may feel shy or uncertain in social situations. This evidence-based intervention is proven to help teens make lasting gains — with studies showing improvement even five years after completing the program.
What You’ll Learn
Throughout the course, you’ll focus on key social skills, including:
- Starting and maintaining conversations
- Making and keeping friendships
- Understanding body language and non-verbal communication
- Navigating group situations and social events
- Building self-confidence and reducing social anxiety
Course Structure
This unique program includes:
- 90-Minute Teen Sessions: Interactive, hands-on activities — including role-playing scenarios — designed to teach social skills in a supportive environment.
- 90-Minute Parent/Carer Sessions: Concurrent sessions where caregivers learn how to be a social coach and support their teen's progress at home and in real-life situations.
- Homework Tasks: Weekly activities to reinforce what you’ve learned, giving you opportunities to practise and improve your skills.
Additional Support
- Frequent Parent/Carer Mentoring: Ongoing support and mentoring for parents and carers to ensure you’re equipped to guide your teen through their social development.
- Social Event: As a bonus, we host a free social event during the school holidays on a farm, featuring equine-assisted activities. It’s a great chance to practise social skills in a relaxed, enjoyable setting!
Why This Course?
Led by a qualified Design and Technology teacher and a Nurse Practitioner — both of whom have faced their own social struggles — this course is designed by people who truly understand what it’s like to navigate social situations when you’re unsure of yourself. Our evidence-based interventions will give you the skills to succeed while respecting your unique social journey.
What Makes Us Different?
We are a disability-led social enterprise that is proud to be neurodiversity-friendly. This means we don’t force eye contact, discourage stimming, or push for conformity. Instead, we provide tools and strategies that empower you to use social skills in ways that feel authentic to you.
The course is best suited for socially motivated teens who are ready and committed to improving their social skills. With small class sizes (4-8 teens), each participant receives personalised attention for a tailored experience.
